Knowing that he couldn't just rush over to where his back pack was with the rock, he tried to answer the reporters questions without giving away too much. He down played his role and played up the roles of everyone else.
Once the reporter had asked her questions of Jon/Bethany, she turned to Mrs. Rose. Meanwhile Jon hurried, without appearing to hurry to his back pack and pulled out the rock.
