There was something... Athena had to... she had to keep hold of something. Why wasn't there a goth team? Miss Fine. The Ankh of Ankara. It was slowly coming back to her, as she began to fit into her own environment. But whatever team Athena chose, or even whatever team was chosen for her, she had a feeling that she'd find herself lost in it, drifting once again.
But, really, did she have a choice?
Athena scanned the room once again, and her attention caught on Zoe Gibson. Her best friend, Zoe Gibson. Yes, that was something that made sense. Athena found a smile curling on her lips as she thought about all of the things that she and Zoe had in common. All the times they'd hung out, birthdays spent together, classes shared. If Athena was going to choose any team, it would be Zoe's team. It would have to be.
"Ow!" Athena was interrupted from her thoughts as a light pain emanated from her backside.
"What are you standing around for, girly," Melissa Smith laughed as she ran past Athena, "Come join the group!"
Athena rubbed at her butt cheek where Melissa had slapped her, and hen stopped. Something didn't feel right. Athena turned and twisted so she could see the reflection of her backside in one of the gymnasium windows, and there it was: "CHEER" in all capital letters, plastered in white across her backside. The otherwise-black running shorts were still regulation, but Karyn must have known what she was giving Athena to wear.
The once-goth scanned the room looking for Karyn, only to receive a wink and a playful sticking out of the tongue when she'd found her target. For a moment, Athena scowled. But at the end of the day, did it really matter? She was still going to join Zoe's team. She still remembered slumber parties and doing each other's nails. She still remembered gushing over a shared issue of Seventeen Magazine. She still remembered... no, something was wrong.
Coach Barry blew her whistle again. No time to think about it, Athena jogged over to where the rest of the cheerleaders had gathered.
