Steven tried to back away, to move himself out of this disturbing facsimile of his friend, holding an even more disturbing implication of what might have happened to her.
Yet no matter how much he wanted to move, it seemed that he was to remain glued to the floor, his whole body frozen with one step backwards from the gem as it effortlessly installed this new thing into Steven’s body. He couldn’t breathe. His lungs started to burn from lack of use. His chest strangled itself as he felt what could only be a heart attack. His eyes burned as they failed in any and all attempts to win a forced staring contest with this Pearl who was determined to look him in the eyes as it did its work. All that escaped Steven’s lips was a strangled whimper.
The pearl had made its way squarely on Steven's forehead, right where Pearl's gem usually went! After the pearl was in place, the White Pearl pushed his mother's gem into his body, moving around a couple organs to make room for it. It was now totally invisible, and all that remained was the new gem he'd gotten on his head. When White Pearl completed its task, it thanked Steven for his cooperation. It slid away, going through the same wall it entered.
Once the gem was done with its work, Steven collapsed on the floor. He gasped for air, making up for lost breath, lost beat, and nearly lost life.
White Diamond asked, "Starlight, are you done with the theatrics? Everyone likes a good show once in a while, but you’re not getting through this any easier by complaining like some silly Amethyst!”
Steven tried to ask through gasps of air, “What was that?” It was aimed both at himself and the towering figure before him, trying to get information from whatever source might grant him solace.
“Oh, Starlight, it’s just what you wanted! A chance to be with the common gems! Think of it like a whole new adventure. Isn’t that what you always talk about so much? Adventure? Or equality?” White Diamond smiled with that same ethereal and constant mood. It was a monotone, a monomood.
He looked down at his navel, rubbing his hand over the gem as he tried to see the soft pink of his skin that greeted him every day of his life, instead of the stark white that stared up at him. It was super weird and uncomfortable, and he didn’t like it at all!
The gem glowed as Steven felt his body grow numb again. Was this more paralysis setting in, or something maybe even worse?
Heading in a new direction!
