"Mom?"
Sandra looked up from behind the seven eleven counter. In front of her was a very pretty blonde with a surprisingly large bust size.
"Yes, miss?"
"Mom, it's me. Jo"”Joanne. I think you might have been in my room again."
"Yes, er no, miss. I don't even know who you are."
"But you're my mom."
"I think you've mistaken me for someone else. I don't have any daughters. Now was there anything else I could help you with?"
"No! Wait! I-- ." Joanne noticed the stone. "That stone in you hand. Do you know what it is?"
"This old thing?" Sandra waved it casually and for a moment Joanne feared it might shatter on the counter.
"Don't!! Please! Don't do that! Just-just think, what is the last thing you remember doing with that stone?"
"Nothing. I was just daydreaming."
"Daydream?! Right! That makes sense!"
"I'm sorry?"
"I can explain it all later. First tell me more about your daydream. In it, did you have a son named Jon?"
"How did you know?"
"Because I'm him"”or was, anyways."
"That isn't very funny, miss. You're a lovely young lady but --"
"Yeah, now. That stone did it. It's magic."
"Really. I wish you'd just"”"
"STOP!"
"Excuse me?"
"You're excused."
"I'm what?"
"Sorry! Sorry! Please, don't get angry, Mom. I couldn't help it. Really."
"Then stop calling me 'mom'."
"Just"”I can explain. I promise. It'll all make sense! Just- just put that stone down first. Please."
The clerk looked at Joanne for a moment, sizing her up. After a moment she set the stone on the counter.
Joanne reached out and almost got her hand slapped. "Just sliding it right over here, mom. You can have it back in a minute. Okay."
That out of the way, it was time to get down to details. "Now try to remember as clearly as possible where you were in your daydream."
"Well, I was in John's bedroom."
"AHA! I knew it!"
"Do not take that tone with me, young lady."
"I just mean, er, Sorry. Never mind. Forget it. What else?"
" 'What else,' what?"
"Mom! Er, Sorry." At least her character wasn't changed. "I apologize. Now please. Just"”what were you doing in my"”in your son's room?"
"Well, he had left home without telling me where he was going and so when his friend Karyn called, she seemed so nice and polite and responsible that I wished that Jon was more like her."
"I knew it!"
"I've had enough of this." She reached for the stone but Joanne got it first.
"Wait, Mom! Please! It's this thing! It grants wishes."
"Seriously, miss. If you don't want me calling the police you'll give that back and leave."
Joanne was frantic now. Looking around the counter quickly she pointed at the plastic jar of beef jerky and quickly said, "I wish those were pickled pigs feet!"
They both felt the wave as the contents of the jar shifted and changed.
Sandra gaped. "How did you do that?"
"I told you, Mom. It's this thing. It grants wishes. You found it under my pillow and you were holding it when"”"
"I just wished you were more like Karen! Then that really was my life? You're my daughter?"
"Was your son. When you made that wish it made me as much like Karyn as possible by turning me into her little sister."
"Then I'll just wish you back. I'll have my house and my career and"”and"”" Sandra grabbed at the stone.
"Not quite, Mom. Wishes can't be undone."
Sandra began to wail, "What have I done?"
"Wait, Mom! It's not that bad. Really." Sandra calmed as Joanne went on. "All you wished for was that I was more like Karyn, right? And the stone interpreted that into making me her sister. Right?"
"Yes. I guess so."
"Good. We can work with that. While a wish can't be undone"”that is the specific thing wished for can't be reversed"”it can be modified. All you have to do is repeat the wish with extra conditions."
"You mean like so that I'm still your mother?"
"Right."
"Okay," Sandra said, wiping back a tear as she took back the stone. "Here. I wish that you were only more like Karyn by being more courteous and responsible and that you're my daughter!"
"MOM!"
"What?"
"You wished me to be your daughter. I was hoping to be male again."
"Ooh. Sorry. Except that nothing changed so maybe it's okay."
Joanne realized that it was true. They were still standing around the counter of a Seven Eleven. "But that doesn't make any sense," said Joanne. "Let me see that. I wish I knew why my mother's last wish didn't work."
"Anything?"
"No."
"Is it broken? Maybe we used all the wishes up?"
"No. grandpa says you can't use it up. Which means I wish to clearly understand the changes that took place due to my Mother's last wish."
That was a doozy. Suddenly Joanne saw deeply into the fabric of space in a very limited and focused way that made the wish and its fulfillment perfectly clear if not easily explainable. "Well, it's kinda hard to explain but the net result is that you're my Mom again. That's pretty much it." Joanne pulled out her drivers license to confirm.
"But where's my house? I don't want to be a clerk in a 7-11 for the rest of my life."
