As Zoe and Karyn approached Sarah's house, Zoe's mom called her on her cellphone.
"Zoe, I thought since you're already out, maybe you could go by the church and pick up my bible. I think Sister Mariam has it," she told Zoe over the phone.
Zoe sighed. "Okay, Mom." She hung up.
"Sorry, Karyn. I gotta go do something for my mom."
"It's okay. Sarah's party goes all night. If you can make it, we could go later tonight."
"That would be great. Thanks, Karyn." She turned and walked in the other direction and yelled back "I'll be as quick as possible."
"Okay, I'll be waiting."
On her way to the church, Zoe checked her watch. 4:56, that wasn't too bad. Night wouldn't start until about 6:30 or 7:00.
She walked for nearly ten minutes and then finally got to the church. Zoe's mom was a church-goer almost all her life and she wasn't in much favor of Zoe's interest in Wicca. But now, since her mom is a Goth, is she still that way?
Zoe entered the main door and looked around. The congregation area had double doors, but no windows, so she couldn't look inside to see what was what. It didn't matter, because she heard Sister Mariam talking to someone and walking down the hall towards her. Let's get this over with, Zoe thought.
But she was surprised when she saw Sister Mariam. In fact, she was in shock.
Was she still even a real nun, wearing something like that?
"Ah, Zoe. I have your mother's bible here, she must have accidentally left it." She handed Zoe the book.
Zoe looked down at it and was confused (but only a little). "This is a Wiccan bible."
"Of course it is. Why wouldn't it be?"
Exactly: why wouldn't be? But Sister Mariam is still here. As if it's still a Catholic church, Zoe thought.
The stone must have mixed aspects of both. Why? Who knows? But the fact is, Zoe was standing in a church that she never dreamed that she'd ever have a chance to be in: a Wiccan church.
She left the church, still feeling confused. But, part of her liked it. Again, here is another thing that Zoe and her mother have in common now.
But, it was still weird.
She looked down the street towards downtown and wondered what else was different.
