Biff slipped through the rest of his day largely unnoticed. By the end of lunch period, he found himself fitting seamlessly in with his new group of friends, so much so that even Monica was being nice to him. For the rest of the day, he didn't really talk to anyone other than this new group of friends, and even then only in unassuming ways. Offering a pencil when Courtney seemed to be unable to find one in her backpack. Complimenting Kyla on her Legend of Zelda-themed notebook. Consoling Gladys when the English teacher asked what famous book William Golding wrote, and she excitedly raised her hand to answer "The Princess Bride." Golding wrote "Lord of the Flies," it turned out.
Avoiding Monica, for the most part.
Jon seemed to fall into the orbit of this group, as well, but he seemed distracted most of the day. His attention kept returning to Karyn and Sarah whenever either or both of them were in the room. Like he knew something was wrong, but couldn't do anything about it. Biff also knew that something was wrong, but he found it strange that Jon would. Nobody else seemed to have noticed anything strange when Karyn suddenly started making out with Sarah in the middle of the lunch room and grew a foot in height before everyone's eyes.
But Jon noticed. And Biff noticed Jon noticing. He filed that information away.
As easily as Biff had slipped into his new group of friends, he slipped out unnoticed in just the same way as the final bell rang. Where he'd parked his big, shiny pick-up with an eagle pained on the hood that morning, he now found an older model Chrysler Town and Country, with an unassuming tan coat of paint and no adornments. Two days ago, this would have bothered him. Today, he had something else on his mind.
He didn't want to go home. At least, he didn't want to go to his own home. He didn't dislike the changed feelings he'd been experiencing throughout the day, but they left him with a lot of questions, and there really wasn't anyone in his life who he felt comfortable asking those questions.
But there had been someone in Karyn's life, the life he'd experienced the day before. And maybe if he talked to Karyn's mom, even though she wouldn't know who he was, maybe she would be able to give him some clarity.
