The last few classes of the day were once again striking in just how normal they were, even given the mismatched attire on most of the students and several of the teachers. Jon didn't run into Karyn, who seemed to be actively avoiding him, not that he could blame her. When the final bell rang, he tried to stop by her locker, but she'd already cleared out and headed home. He sighed.
"C'mon, Jon, practice!" he heard two guys call to him.
"Yeah, coming, I think," he tossed back. Jon pulled out his phone and began texting.
JON: I'm apparently on the soccer team now
There was no response for a few seconds. Then finally:
KARYN: Since when?
JON: Since lunch, I think
JON: I think it was one of your wishes
There was another pause.
KARYN: Have fun, I guess
JON: Yeah, I guess
KARYN: I'm still mad
JON: I know
JON: I'm really sorry
KARYN: I know
KARYN: Don't do anything else stupid
JON: That'll be hard
JON: Apparently I'm very good at it
KARYN: You definitely are
KARYN: Ok we'll talk later
Another pause.
KARYN: Love you.
Jon stared. That was new, too. Or at least to him.
JON: Love you too
