Personally, I was proud of my creations. We spent a whole in-game week before we were discovered by the NPCs. A man came from the forested mountains. He was a scout of the local lord. He wanted to know what was going on here. That was to be expected with the situation. Part of the rules was that I needed to identify myself to any NPC asking. "Are you the lord of this town?" he asked me. I did not say yes. Limerick Jill knew better than to claim ownership of the island. The overbearing nature of the Protectors made Pollo Island into a de facto police state. It was one of the reasons she was so unpopular. We were not allowed to rule over NPCs. There is nothing a random NPC could do against a Sage. It simply was not fair. This was why Sages made Protectors in the first place. "I am not the lord. I lead these people, but the land is not mine to rule. We see ourselves as a free people." I said carefully to not break the rules. I was just promoted here. I did not want to be seen as worse than a monster like Limerick Jill. Especially not when I just got the position from Lance Quaid himself.
Under the circumstances, the scout was surprised. "There is no lord! Why is there a castle and moat here then!?" he demanded. I simply shrugged. "Castles look cool. It was what the builders wanted to make. Beyond that, we need protection if we want to continue being independent." was my answer. He wrung his hands. "I don't believe it will stay this way for long." he grumbled out loud. I asked him "What do you mean by that?" He looked at me boldly. I could tell that he was not happy with me. "These lands rightfully belong to my lord. You might have snuck your way here, but you will submit or be destroyed." he said coldly. That was fair. This was the only thing a feudal lord could do in a situation like this. If he could not bring us under heel, others might start to question his authority. That could lead to war and assassinations. I could not rule as a Sage. It did not say that I had to submit to any lord. It simply did not say that I had to, so I was not going to. If I got punished for winning a war of independence over here, I would just submit to their next lord's demands. I sent the beta scout away.
Calling my bluff, the lord sent a squad of 10 samurai here. They wanted to shake me down for taxes and an oath of loyalty. I said no to them. Independence was cool. All we would do was just send in crops or money. We could even send enough to crash the economy. They did not like that at all. Those samurai began walking around the settlement. They were kicking things around like thugs. The commoners were pretty upset with them. There was not much they could do. I did not give them any combat skills. I was not going to do anything about it. I could not fight them as a Sage. Epsilon could not do it either. Thinking about it objectively, if I was not here, nothing would get done until they entered the castle. I set things so all of the fighters were inside the castle. I could probably make some Protectors that could patrol around the fief. A level 35 samurai would certainly stop them from running amok. When they were active in the town, we would be protected. It was after the extortion team left that I went to the castle to create more Protectors. I made new omega male Protectors for us all.
