"So we agree. The wish is..." Karyn paused an took a deep breath. "I wish that myself and Jon Merlin have access to a browser plugin that allows us to edit any social media post, which results in our edits becoming reality." Karyn asked me. The playfulness of earlier was gone. Karyn was all business now.
"Add the word exclusive. That way we have exclusive access to the plugin. Then we don't have to worry about other people around the world using it." I responded.
"Good catch." Karyn said. "So are you good?" She asked. Her question seemed to fill the room with a chilling and sobering aura. I glanced down at the goosebumps on my arms and then back up to Karyn. Not saying a word, I nodded yes. "Okay..." Karyn took a deep breath and grabbed the stone off my bed. "I wish that myself, and Jon Merlin, have exclusive access to a browser plugin that allows us to edit any social media post, which results in our edits becoming reality." We both winced at the sensation of the wish. When our eyes were able to refocus, I saw Karyn snatch a piece of paper out of the air in front of her. "JON! The addendum!" She squeaked showing me the piece of paper.
I grabbed the paper from Karyn and began reading. "Jon and Karyn's Social Media Plugin Rules." I gulped reading the title and continued on.
- Exclusive use. The plugin exists only on Karyn Black's and Jon Merlin's devices and can only be used by Karyn Black and Jon Merlin.
- Geographic limit. The plugin only works on posts made by people whose IP address places them within a 100-mile radius of Lake Point at the time of posting.
- Text edits. The plugin may alter up to 25% of a post's original character count.
- Character additions and deletions. The plugin may add or delete characters to a post, but the net character change may not exceed 10% of the original character count.
- No deletions. The plugin cannot delete an entire post.
- Public posts only. The plugin works on public posts on social media platforms. It does not work on private messages, drafts, or posts visible only to restricted audiences.
- No editing self posts. The plugin cannot be used on posts authored by Karyn Black or Jon Merlin.
- Reality adaptation. Reality will adapt to make an edited post true, but only within the normal limits of physics and human physiology. It cannot grant superhuman abilities, make someone fly, or otherwise break natural law.
- Awareness. Aside from Karyn Black and Jon Merlin, no one will be consciously aware that reality has changed — except people Karyn and/or Jon personally informs. Records, photos, and memories adjust accordingly.
- Undo function. The plugin has an undo function that can restore a post to its original text. When a post is restored to its original text reality with revert accordingly.
- Conflicting edits. The most recent edit supersedes earlier edits. Reality resolves contradictions in favor of the newest edits.
- Edited images. The plugin may upload an edited image to any post containing an image, but the image can only modify elements already depicted in the original photograph. Edited images do not count against the character limits of Rule 3 or 4.
I looked up from the paper at Karyn who looked just as gobsmacked as I was. "Holy fuck. My safety wish worked... Well I think it worked."
The state of shock on Karyn's face quickly faded as her eyes lit up. "Jon! This is fucking awesome! My dude!" She grabbed my shoulders and shook me aggressively. "We can edit social media now! We are like the goddesses of social media now!"
"God and Goddess" I interjected. "And before we get too crazy." I snatched the stone off my bed and quickly put it back into the box. "Get off my bed so I can put this back." I said to Karyn as I lifted up my mattress to hide the box between the mattress and the box spring.
Karyn slid off my bed and quickly fished her phone out of her pocket. "I gotta see this." She said pulling up Fastgram. I watched as the excitement drained from Karyn's face. "Where is it... How do I?"
I walked over to Karyn and looked at her phone. She had the Fastgram app open and it looked just like it always did. "Wait!" An idea popped into my head and I rushed over to my computer. Opening up the EarthWolf browser, I pulled up Fastgram, and navigated to a post by my sister Josie. "There!" I pointed to a notification in the browser toolbar. "There's the plugin!" I hovered the cursor over the plugin and a list of options appeared. "I bet..." I moved the cursor down to the text of Josie's post and a little button appeared in the corner of the text. "It's there too!"
"Well fuck. I was hoping the app would let me edit posts..." Karyn stopped and smacked her forehead. "Shit I did say browser plugin in the wish didn't I. Well fuck... I guess I will be the goddess of Fastgram via my laptop..." Karyn glanced down at her phone that started buzzing in her hand. "Crap... I gotta go. Mom is asking where I'm at." Karyn snatched her backup off the floor and headed towards my bedroom door. "Hey." Karyn said looking back over her shoulder. "Promise me you won't go crazy with your new power." She said with a wink. "We should both do some testing tonight. Then let's walk to school together tomorrow. I feel like we'll need to debrief in person. You got it chief?"
"Sure." I said as Karyn disappeared out my bedroom door.
