10 minutes in, we learned that he man we saved was an errant knight. He was on the lookout for ways to help those in need. It was a nice sentiment. Unfortunately, he was set upon by a clan of bandits. Outnumbered, he was beaten and left for dead. It was sheer will power that kept him alive until we got there. He was still not in a good enough condition to keep going. As his saviors, he wanted to pay us back. That was not needed. I did it out of the goodness of my heart. He would not accept that. He wanted to repay us. His name was Ranulf. I decided to make up a task. Ranulf was going to have to spar with all my knighted children. Runulf was surprised that they were all my children. I crossed my arms. "Is there something wrong?" I asked him. Wisely, he kept whatever initial thoughts to himself. He got obliterated by my sons. He could barely subdue Ren. my youngest after 3 matches. The others were just far beyond him. This was, no doubt, very humbling. I assured him that they were just strong as they were hybrids and part of a tribe that made them faster. He did not like that at all.

3 weeks of intense training with Betan and he thought he was ready to avenge himself against my sons. He was still 10 years too early. My sons were no slouches. They had been actively training as well. The wiped the floor with Sir Ranulf. He did not know what to do with himself. I told him that the county was always in need of knights willing to do good. He could travel within the county doing good. Ranulf sighed. "I guess that this is the full extent of what I am capable of." he said. That was how he ended up settling down in Mansfield. Unfortunately, being defeated so many times had crushed that spirit to do good. He instead found a woman to court. Ranulf was a tall, dark and handsome man. It was not long before she said yes to him. He still looked for good deeds, but he never ventured far from the castle town. That was not to say that he was a failure. Plenty of people needed help in the town and surrounding villages. He was able to gain enough local renown that Count Swifthunt employed him as the new captain of the guard. He was very grateful. I was personally proud of him.
