"Oh honey, it's ok. I'm not mad, I just didn't want you disturbing your sister." Sarah's mother (Paige couldn't bear to think of the woman as her mother) knelt down and enfolded her in a comforting embrace. On her knees, Sarah's mother was about the same height as Paige was.
"I'm so little," she mumbled to herself.
"It's ok, sweetie," their mother cooed. "You'll get bigger soon." Since their mother hadn't heard the wish (oh god, she was thinking of the woman as her mother already) she didn't have any idea that her younger daughter had been a boy several minutes earlier. The thought would have been so absurd that if she had even thought it she would have immediately dismissed it as ridiculous.
Sounding entirely too smug for her own good, Sarah informed her mother, "She was just asking me about her girl parts. I think it's time you have that discussion with her." This caught Paige's attention and she stiffened in her mother's arms.
"Paige, don't be embarrassed. It's only natural for you to be curious about your body."
Paige wasn't sure she could ever feel any more embarrassed than she did at that moment. She imagined that if the bathroom lights turned off right now, she would provide the room with a bright red glow that everyone would be able to see by.
Their mom turned to Sarah. "Honey, are you almost done?"
Nodding and pulling the drain plug, Sarah stood up and grabbed a towel. She dried off awkwardly in front of her mother and her new little sister, still holding the stone. When she was dry, she put on the silk robe. "All yours," she chirped melodically.
As she passed Paige on the way out Sarah whispered in her ear, "Play along for an hour or so and then we'll talk." She pecked Paige a kiss on the forehead, repeated with her mom on the cheek, and then walked out of the bathroom, leaving Paige alone with her new mother.
