When Jon and Karyn arrived at school the next day, the hallway was even more crowded than usual. There were tables lining the walls, narrowing the corridor where students could travel, and each table was covered in baked goods.
"Cheerleader Bake Sale," Karyn read from a banner hanging from the ceiling. "Did you know about this?"
"Why would I?" Jon shrugged. "But I haven't seen any prices on anything. Or a place to pay, come to think of it. I wonder how this is even supposed to work."
"Oh, it's simple!" came a cheery voice from behind them.
"Sarah?" Jon and Karyn turned in unison.
"See, this bake sale was planned way in advance to fund the cheerleader's travel over to Sheboygan to meet Cody Rhodes at a WWE Cheer! Youth in Sports™ event," Sarah rambled on without really paying attention to whether or not her audience was following her. "But then we were talking about the French Revolution in history class, and it just hit me: let them eat cake!"
Sarah paused to get a reaction, but none came from either Jon or Karyn.
"You know," Sarah gestured to the nearest table, "the cake should be free! I got my dad to sponsor the trip, so now instead of a bake sale, it's just, y'know," Sarah bent over to pick up a slice of something covered in frosting and sitting on a paper doily, then presented it to Jon. "Let them eat cake!"
"I'm sorry?" Jon eyed the proffered pastry with suspicion.
"Go ahead, have one," Sarah tried to nudge the item into Jon's hand. "This one's got lemon curd!"
Jon looked over at Karyn. Karyn looked back at Jon. Something felt strange. But Sarah was being very insistent, and uncharacteristically friendly, and the entire hallway did smell good.
With a shrug, Jon took the pastry from Sarah, and took a bite.
