The results of Jon's wish were not immediate apparent to him, leaving him locked in a state of anxiety. Uncertain of what had happened or would happen, he got very little sleep that night.
Events that were unfolding were doing so outside of his awareness...at least for now. Events that wouldn't have happened before the wish.
In a basement elsewhere in town, Kyla Leeson was working on a project. Her friend, Jay Duncan, was the hard science sort...Kyla was more into chemistry and biology. Kyla was also usually a shy and quiet sort. Which was the problem. Kyla liked herself, but she was trying to come up with something that would make her less nervous when she had to do public speaking...which unfortunately, she was being forced to do the next day. She extracted the final sample, ran the final test, and then poured blue liquid into a glass. "Plenty of scientists experimented on themselves," she mumbled, downing it.
She waited ten minutes...fifteen...nothing happened. She looked at herself in the mirror...she didn't feel any different, not more confident...just embarrassed for thinking anything could change.
She headed to bed. The next day, Jay hurried up to Jon and Karyn. "Have you seen Kyla today?" he asked.
He shook his head. "No..."
"She and I are supposed to give an oral presentation in history today. We met up before school in the library to get ready...but then she went to the bathroom and never came back."
"How long ago?"
"About twenty minutes ago..."
"I'll go check the bathroom," Karyn said. Karyn returned a few minutes later. "No sign of her," she reported.
The three started to look around.
