Biff held up a small rectangle of blue fabric. Just four rows, of just twenty stitches each. He'd had to back-track a few times to fix mistakes. And even then, it wasn't even. Little bends where one stitch was too tight, and the next one was too loose. But by the end of lunch period, Biff felt he was starting to get the hang of it. He could almost feel his brain expanding with possibilities, as he thought of all of the things he could make if he practiced.

"Where do you get your supplies from?" Biff asked as he handed Courtney back her things.

"Nana's Quilting Store, out on Market Street. Across from the Applebees?" Courtney smiled as she re-organized yarn in her backpack. "Go in and ask for Maressa, she's the expert on yarn in there."

Biff smiled. Maressa. He'd remember that.

But his smile faded as he looked up to see Jon Gibson getting up and walking towards him and the girls. "Jon's coming over here," Biff said in a tone just loud enough for the other four girls to hear, but just low enough to communicate that he didn't want Jon to come over.

Monica quickly glanced in Jon's direction, then scanned all the girls' faces. A brief exchange of facial expressions later, and Monica's hand was on Biff's wrist. Gently, but firmly, leading him away from the table and out of the cafeteria. "The girls will play interference, I'll walk you to class."

Biff looked up gratefully at Monica. He still wasn't sure why Jon was giving him strange vibes, but he wasn't going to test it.

Jon, meanwhile, could have sworn he'd seen Karyn's body sitting at the table with Kyla and Gladys and Courtney, but by the time he got to the table the three girls were alone.

He tried to ask were Karyn was, but the girls all gave him noncommittal replies. What the hell was going on today? By the time Jon finally gave up trying to get information out of them, half the cafeteria had already emptied out. And that included Karyn operating the body of Biff Meadows.

And Jon was left to stand there as the other half of the room emptied out, all alone in the middle of a big, empty room, left completely clueless as to what was going on or what he should do.
