“Maybe it changed your backstory somehow?” Jon offered. He felt a little bad for Gary but he still couldn’t keep the smirk off his face.
He snatched his phone and quickly rang maman again. She introduced herself in French again, a smoother French before asking why he had called her back.
“Tell me when we moved back to the USA again?” Gary asked in fluent French.
“But I just told you minutes ago.” Maman said in French before transitioning to English in an odd American accent. “Our job offers in the US fell through so we stayed in France, moved to Paris until you turned thirteen.”
“Uhhh, z’ank you Maman. I must go,” Gary purred and hung up. What did that mean for his life? Had the I.D. card minimized the differences except for the extra years in France? Did he still have any of his long-time friends? Was he no longer into video games and cars?
“What ze phuck, Jon?” Gary said. The word fuck came out strangely accented. Well, everything he said now was strangely accented.
Jon shrugged, and then giggled, and then raised his arms in surrender at Gary’s thunderous expression.
“Well, I ‘ave got one for you, Jon,” Gary said with an equally cute and intimidating smirk. He held Jon's I.D. card in his hand.
