Sarah usually didn't walk home. But she'd been picked up that morning, and no way was she going to let her ride see her like this. She fumed, trying to figure out what this was and what to do about it, and when she looked up, discovered she was standing at the door of an unfamiliar house. She paused, what was she doing here?
Before Sarah could figure anything out, a car pulled up in front and a woman stepped out. "Sarah, good...you're home." Sarah almost hadn't recognized her, even the voice for a moment. It sounded like her mother, Susan. But Susan was a society wife, a model, and a blond who looked years younger than her actual age. Except she didn't.
This was a dark haired version of her mother, with a much more modest figure, dressed in what looked like clothes from a local department store. She looked fit, but not, well, supermodel fit. "Home?" Sarah said, shocked.
"Yes...I need your help with dinner before your father comes home."
"Umm...ordering it?" Sarah said. She wasn't even sure if her mother knew how to use a stove, much less make a meal.
"Really funny, Sarah," Susan said.
Sarah tried to digest this. Her mother was supposed to be at a photo shoot downtown today, and then was supposed to meet up with her father. They had some sort of charity function that evening. And Susan would usually come back from those having had a bit too much to drink and then sleep till long after Sarah went to school. Family dinners were not a common thing in the McMillan house. Whatever Karyn had done to her, the witch, it had affected her parents as well.
