As the Sumer came to an end Mark was comfortable as Mary. She was good friends with Jess, and the two exchanged numbers to keep in contact. On the bus ride home they gave each other back their shoes and hugged.
Mary and his girlfriend made their way to Mary’s home.
“I was wondering” Mary said, looking at the ground and twisting one foot. “Would it be possible to stay this way? I had fun over the summer. Maybe I can be Kate’s twin?”
Mary’s girlfriend took a step back in surprise. Taking a moment to process the request, she Knelt down to Mary’s level.
“You want to be a girl? It won’t be all fun. There will be new things to learn, there may be bullies, and you will need to go through school again.”
She tried to explain some possible challenges in the years ahead if Mark continues as Mary.
“I have enjoyed the summer as well. While the amulet can still be used if needed, please be sure this is what you want.”
Mark, now Mary, thought back to the summer. Sharing a cabin with Jess, being scared on the monster, archery lessons, fond memories.
“I think so.” He, now she, said.
“Ok then. Welcome to the family sister.” Mary’s now former girlfriend and current sister embraced her in a hug. “Let’s get you home.”
Mary’s mind started to shift. “Is this not home? No.”
Mary accepted a ride to her new home, beginning her new life as Kates twin. Her new parents were not there, but Kate was. New memories came into Mary’s mind about being born a few minutes after Kate, spending time with Kate as close sisters, going to middle school, enjoying camping, and being in girl guides coming to her mind.
