For the rest of the afternoon, whenever Karyn found herself in the driver's seat, she just instinctually forced herself to start talking about how amazing Jon was. It didn't matter what she was doing, it didn't matter what the conversation had been up until that point. If anyone asked her why she was talking about Jon so much, she said something like "I guess it's just the feeling of being in a new relationship," and whoever she was talking to would sigh and give her latitude to keep on going.
Karyn figured that if she was complimenting Jon the moment that Other Karyn took over, then some of those thoughts would carry over into what Other Karyn was doing, just like how Other Karyn's thoughts about hoodies had carried over into Karyn. And since the change could happen at any time, Karyn just made sure she was always saying nice things about Jon.
And it seemed to be working. When Karyn woke up in the locker room at the beginning of gym class, she could feel her mouth forming words that she had not put there: "Maybe that dork deserves a shot, after all."
Karyn had the distinct feeling that she knew who the term "that dork" referred to, even if she couldn't recall the conversation she had just been having with Amber.
That didn't stop her from redoubling her efforts. "I just love how clever he is. Like, usually Jon is pretty quiet, but sometimes he'll just say the wittiest thing out of nowhere. Like his mind is always working in the background, and we only get to see the parts he says out--"
Then Karyn was gone again. But she knew that she wasn't forgotten.
