Simon Davison, Principal, walked into the room and stood in front of Athena DeVries and Zelda Whitefield. "What am I going to do with you..." He paused. "Where's Miss Gibson?"
The two girls shrugged. Neither of them seemed interested in doing much talking.
"Well, no matter...I'll deal with her later. You see, the three of you are a disruption to this school. I have had to put up with your older Goth type friends for two years now...I don't need them recruiting more troublemakers. And I'll get to them soon enough," he said. He paused. "Nothing to say?"
"No, I thought you'd give the speech and then let us leave or send us to detention like you usually do," Zelda said.
"Not this time, Miss Whitefield. You see...there was a rather bright student...Jay Duncan...he invented this," he pulled out a small box. "It has the ability to make you part of the problem, not the solution."
Both of them seemed rather skeptical. But then, he aimed it at both of them, and pressed a button...and they felt...nothing. He put it away. "You are free to go for now. I'll expect to see you on time tomorrow morning...of course, I know you will be. You won't be able to help it."
They exchanged looks. The two weren't Zoe...Zoe had a tendency to fly off the handle. Athena and Zelda were just not interested in playing games with him.
"Mr. Duncan...you won't remember him, assuming you knew him at all, was playing with physics concepts and somehow, yesterday, developed this device. I am not quite sure how exactly it works, but the principle as it was explained to me was something about probabilities and quantum physics. It was lucky I was there rather than someone who might misused such a machine. So, it will start changing you into another version of yourselves...but only the three of us will know about it."
"You're crazy," Athena said. "Not even powerful magic can do that."
"Ah, Miss DeVries...as you know, any science can look like magic to the untrained eye...and none of the three of us know how this thing works, so it might as well be magic. In the meantime, you are dismissed."
Zelda got to her feet, and suddenly felt dizzy, her hair returning to its natural color.
