Karyn had been right. After a brief exchange with Coach Barry, she and Sarah were allowed to work out by themselves on the football field, while everyone else was doing exercises or playing sports in the gym.
Jon exited the boy’s locker room just in time to see the two blondes giggling together as they walked out of the gym’s big double doors, and his heart sunk. Why was Sarah here? What could he do about it? He wasn’t going to get permission to leave the gym, and even if he did, how was he going to get close to Karyn without facing the wrath of… other Karyn?
Jon felt a sense of dread well up inside of him as he picked up a basketball that had rolled to his feet. He needed to make sure he got to Karyn as quickly as possible when class was over, but keep up appearances for now. He stepped into the middle of the painted area and took a shot.
Air ball.
Every shot Jon took that period resulted in an air ball.
Meanwhile, Sarah McMillan and Karyn Black were alone on the football field together, just two best friends doing stretches and practicing dance routines together, chatting about life and music and how icky that whole incident with Jon Gibson had been that morning, looking for all the world looking like they were practically sisters.
