Back in the high school, Gina and Karyn still had their lips locked, their shoulders pressing against Karyn's locker almost as tightly as their faces were pressing against one another, when the two were interrupted by a sharp, giddy squeak.
The two seniors paused, disengaged from one another, and turned to look at the source of the noise: Sarah McMillan stood right next to them in the hallway, looking straight at them, with both her hands up against her chin with curled fingers, hiding her mouth from view.
"You two are so..." Sarah paused, as if the next word required extra emphasis to say, and Gina and Karyn dreaded what foul insult awaited. "Cute!"
This was not the foul insult that either girl expected.
"You make such an adorable couple," Sarah continued, speaking too quickly for any interruptions. "Are you dating? Of course you're dating. How long have you been dating? I want all the details. Ooh!" this word transformed into a high-pitched squeal as it exited Sarah's mouth. "This isn't a conversation for between classes. Come sit with me at lunch. Both of you."
Gina tried to muster a response, but was cut off.
"No, I won't accept any excuses. You're sitting with me, and that's that." Then the cheerleader turned and walked away, the back of her skirt swishing a farewell with every step.
"What the hell?" Karyn turned to her girlfriend.
"Sarah can be very fickle sometimes." A new, unexpected voice entered the conversation.
Karyn and Gina turned to see Lucy Corinth, the cheer team's best flyer and shyest member looking up at them from her 4'10" perspective.
"It's tough, it's why I don't really speak out that much around her. I love cheerleading, but if I get on her bad side she'll definitely kick me off the team. So I just kind of try to stay out of her notice. Nondescript."
"That sounds like a rough way to be," Gina intoned.
Lucy just shrugged her petite shoulders. "It's not so bad. Not the best, but not the worst. But you two don't know the rules, and she's taken an interest in you. That could be good. And it could be bad. I'll be sitting at Sarah's table during lunch. You really should sit with us, but follow my lead."
"Do you know why she's taking an interest in us?" Karyn asked.
"Who's to say?" Lucy gave a coy shrug as she began to walk off to her own class. "But you want to know something weird? It must just be a coincidence, but both of Sarah's moms are gay."
A slow dawning arose for both Gina and Karyn as they watched this second cheerleader leave them. The thrill of young love was tempered by the impending doom of whatever Sarah was about to do. Good or bad, neither girl was sure they were going to like it.
