Gina sat on the wall, nervously awaiting Karyn, wondering if she would show after where they'd left things yesterday. Karyn was her best friend and she'd kissed her. Gina had tried not to do anything to ruin their friendship, and she was afraid she might have done just that. Of course, she also might have moved their relationship to a new level.
Finally, Gina spotted her strolling towards her across the yard. She was wearing her usual get-up of scruffy old slacks and her favorite worn old green jumper, her light blond hair resting around her shoulders. As soon as she saw Gina, she grinned and headed toward her. "Hey, G-Girl," Karyn said. "Missed you at lunch. How was going back to middle school?"
"You make it sound like I got left back," Gina said, imagining herself for a moment as an eighteen year old sixth grader. It sounded ridiculous she could almost laugh. "I was so much taller than the kids there that they treated me more like a teacher. I kind of liked it."
"Maybe you want to become a teacher."
Gina shrugged, "Not sure, but maybe..." she paused. "Karyn, about...yesterday..."
Karyn's look suddenly turned serious. "Yeah?"
"I was just explaining boundaries and being aware of people's comfort zones to Mikey and I realized I crossed one with you. I should have just talked to you, but you're my best friend, and I don't want to ruin that. I wanted to talk about it last night, but you kind of ran out quickly."
"I was just a bit surprised," Karyn admitted. "I needed to think." She paused. "Does this mean we're dating?"
Gina's heartrate accelerated. "Do you want us to be?"
Karyn paused. "Do YOU want us to be?" she countered.
Gina blushed, too nervous to respond. She gently nodded her head.
"You know how we were going to go see a movie tomorrow night," Karyn said. "I guess...that's a date now." She flashed her trademark grin. "Oh, and Gina...the next time you cross my boundaries..." she leaned in, "you should do it like this." Karyn kissed her, and it went a bit beyond peck.
After she pulled away, Gina looked at her, a bit dazed.
