Amber wrinkled her brow. "Sarah, you're an only child, too. Why do you need me to tell you what it's like?"
"Never mind," an evil grin wrapped itself around Sarah's face as Jon blinked, and could no longer see his sister.
"Where's Zoe?" Jon asked his mom, dreading the answer he was about to receive.
"Who's Zoe? Is she one of your guests? I don't think I've met a Zoe tonight."
As far as Sarah and Jon knew at this point, Sarah had just erased Zoe from existence. In the heat of the moment, Sarah hadn't thought about the full implications of that...but from Jon's perspective, Sarah was a murderer. Worse than a murderer, she had not just murdered Zoe, but she had murdered the memory of Zoe. Jon's mother didn't even know Zoe had even existed. The fact that she had planned to do that, in Jon's mind, made her a monster.
But, unknown to either of the two, Zoe had not ceased to exist. There were laws in magic, just as there were in science, that governed these things. In this case, souls could not be created or destroyed, only transformed. So, Zoe still existed, just not in the form she had before. There was a gap somewhere in reality that Zoe had just filled.
It didn't eliminate the fact of Sarah's intentions, but karma being what it was, it guaranteed that their paths would cross again. And likely sooner, rather than later.
