Jon began to vent his frustrations the moment he got home. He'd watched all the Spider-Man movies, he knew that with great power came great responsibility, but to see an example of the consequences of great power right before his eyes, to witness his best friend's actual body transforming right in front of him, it shook him. Karyn's entire life may have changed, just because of a few simple words.
How was he going to fix it? How was he going to make sure something like that didn't happen again?
Retreating to his room, Jon replayed the scene over and over in his head. What could he have done differently? Could he have explained the rules better, could he have gotten the stone out of Karyn's hand faster?
"Gah," he grunted in frustration, "she may as well have just said 'I wish I was better than Sarah at everything.'"
The stone glowed. Jon's heart stopped. But nothing else happened.
After a moment to teach himself how to breathe again, Jon flung the stone onto his bed. Then after a quick pace around his bedroom, he picked the stone back up and put it back in its box. And then he shoved the box back into the deepest recesses of his closet.
And he went to bed, cataloging everything about himself that he could, and hoping that he had just dodged a bullet.
