Kelly was frustrated. The line at the coffee shop moved much too slow. She wasn’t in a huge rush but she was anxious. Her mind drifted to her 400 level economics class that afternoon. Lady luck had smiled on her and put her in the same group as Alex, her crush, but she still hadn’t gotten up the nerve to speak to him about anything other than their group project.
She sighed dreamily, as she remembered his short blond hair and bright green eyes. She remembered him talking to the other guy in their group, Ryan, about his car. Kelly didn’t know the first thing about cars beyond how to drive one and to take it in every five thousand miles for maintenance but the way Alex spoke about his was so interesting. He had a Subaru something with a upgraded turbo something else. She couldn’t remember. She should be able to. Would she be able to talk to him today?
The line moved up and Kelly’s phone rang. It was almost her turn and she would soon have to speak with the female barista. This was poor timing. She picked up the call.
“Hey Kelly. Where are you?” Kelly’s roommate Andrea came over the phone. Why was she calling her? They hardly spoke and had nothing in common. At least they’ve never fought.
“The coffee shop. Why? What’s wrong?” Kelly asked with slight annoyance.
“You’re seeing Alex later?”
“You mean my classmate?”
“Yes.”
“Of course, I wouldn’t skip class.”
“Would you like to see him sooner?”
“What?” Kelly asked, annoyance growing.
“Look up,” Andrea said as the call went dead. The person in front of Kelly grabbed their drink and it was now her turn. She put down the phone.
“Kelly, I need your help back here,” Alex said from behind the counter. What!? But he didn’t work here? Kelly looked around. Where did that woman go? “I need your help,” He repeated. “I know you’re new but…”
Kelly looked down to see the barista's apron in herself. She screamed.
