The walk to Karyn's house was a blur of awkwardness and a growing sense of unease for Jon. He felt incredibly self-conscious in Karyn’s clothes, the skinny jeans clinging uncomfortably, and the plaid shirt feeling strangely foreign against his skin. He could feel the eyes of passersby on him, a mix of confusion and amusement that made his stomach churn.
Karyn, walking beside him in his clothes, seemed to be taking it all in stride, though Jon could detect a hint of nervousness beneath her stoic facade. She kept glancing at him, a strange mixture of pity and amusement in her eyes.
"So," Jon began, trying to break the silence, "what exactly are we supposed to be experiencing here? Besides the obvious fashion violation?"
Karyn sighed. "Just wait. You'll see."
They reached her house, and Karyn led him inside.
“Karyn what did you wish for.” He asked again once they reached her room.
“You heard what I said, I wished that for a week we would swap lives and live as each other and deal with the results of any wishes we had made before that wish was made.” She reminded him.
“Yeah I heard that but what does that have to do with us changing clothes? Jon asked.
“Well, I suppose the easiest way to explain things is for you to have a look in the mirror.” She told him.
"Whoa," Jon said. As he looked at himself in the bedroom mirror, but instead of seeing himself, However. When he looked down at himself, he saw himself dressed in Karyn’s clothes. He turned towards Karyn still confused and was about to ask her what was going on when she explained things.
“It's like that old TV show Jon what was it called again? Whenever you look in a mirror you see me instead of yourself. The same will happen when other people look at you as well.” Karyn said.
“Quantum Leap,” Jon said.
“What?” Karyn asked.
“That was the name of the show,” Jon said
“Oh right. Well anyway for the next week, you ARE Karyn Black and I am Jon Madison as far as the rest of the world is concerned anyway.” She replied.
“Why. Karyn? What did I do?” Jon asked his friend.
“Well, you said you wanted to help me with my problem if you could didn’t you?” She asked him without really answering his question.
“I did but I don’t see how this will help. ”He said in return.
“Well, it will help you understand what I am going through. Then maybe you will be able to come up with a way to put things back the way they were before yesterday.” She explained.
Before Jon could say anything else a voice cried out from downstairs
“Karyn Honey, can you give me a hand with the bags from the car?”
Jon recognized the voice as Bethany Black Karyn’s Mom.
“Come on Karyn we had better give your Mom a hand,” Karyn said as she opened the door to the bedroom and started downstairs.
Jon took one more look in the dresser mirror seeing once again his friend's reflection before starting after her.
