“Honey I’m home.” I jokingly said as I walked through the front door of the condo that Ryan and I were renting. We had been roommates since college, and we regularly joked that we were now in a common law marriage since we had been living together for 10+ years. As I took off my shoes I could hear that Ryan was playing video games in the living room. Poking my head around the corner and peering into the living room I could see Ryan sitting there with a headset on button mashing. “I’m back.”
“There’s pizza in the kitchen.” Ryan said keeping his eyes focused on the TV.
“Thanks dude.” I said heading towards the kitchen to grab a slice. Opening up the pizza box I could see Ryan had left me two slices. ”At least he left me something this time.” I thought picking up a slice of room temperature pizza. Snagging a paper plate from the large stack on the counter I tossed the slice in the microwave and rounded up Ryan’s empty paper plates and tossed them in the trash. I wasn’t the neatest person in the world, but Ryan made me feel like I was a neat freak. Hearing the microwave ding I opened it up, poked my slice, shut the microwave door, and set it to run for a few more seconds. That gave me enough time to toss the remaining slice on a paper plate and toss it in the fridge for later.
Walking back out into the living with a now slightly too hot slice of pizza that was attempting to slide off the flimsy paper plate I could see Ryan had finished his match. “What’d you do today?” I asked plopping down in the living room recliner.
“I ranked up.” Ryan said sliding his headset down around his neck. “Other than that. Nothing.” Ryan grabbed his glass off the coffee table and took a drink.
“Jack and Coke?” I asked.
Ryan nodded yes. “I didn’t feel like working today.” Ryan scratched his messy hair. “I’ve got that one contract, but they don’t need things for another week. So I’ll start next week.” Ryan took another drink of his Jack and Coke. “How was the route today?”
I shrugged my shoulders as I took a bite of my cooling slice of pizza. “Eh...” I mumbled as I washed down the pizza with a Coke Zero. “Nothing special.” Then the memory of Stephanie Evergreen popped in my head. “I did see Stephanie Evergreen out today.” Ryan perked up hearing Stephanie’s name. “And...” I took another bite of pizza to keep Ryan hanging. “And she was wearing...” I paused to chew my pizza. “A bikini.” Ryan eyes lit up and I burst out laughing. “Bruh I’m just fucking with you. She was wearing a tank top and cut-off shorts.”
“Dude.” Ryan pointed at me. “That is nothing to joke about. You know how hot I think she is.” Ryan took another drink of his Jack and Coke. “If you ever see her in a bikini you better whip out that cell phone and take pictures for me.” The expression on Ryan’s face told me he was dead serious.
“Don’t worry. For my common law husband, I will.” I joked as I got up from the recliner to go take a shower.
The condo that I shared with Ryan was a two bed two bath so thankfully we didn’t have to share a bathroom, though I did end up with the smaller of the two bathrooms. “O I am so done with today.” I grumbled tossing my phone on the counter by the sink. Reaching into my other pocket I pulled out the pamphlet that Stephanie had given me. I didn’t have time to look at it while I was on my route, but now that I was waiting for the shower to warm up I began to skim through it.
“I’m glad I didn’t mention this to Ryan.” I thought as I opened it up to read the inner pages. “This is kind of nuts...” I mumbled when I got to the Physical Form section. “Could I really change a person’s body?...” I continued onto the next section. “I could have super powers?.. Maybe Stephanie wasn’t messing with me when she said magic was real.” I continued to quickly skim through the different sections and then hopped in the shower. “What if this is real?” I pondered as the warm water bounced off my body.
