The van was quickly replaced by a new one, which they began unloading, including another prone and unconscious form. He was almost afraid to see who it was.
He hurried inside to find the workmen buzzing around his mother's bedroom, putting new clothes in the closet. He headed toward the bed and froze as he saw who was lying there.
He ran back to his room...he needed to talk to Karyn as soon as he could...she was the only person who believed him, even if she didn't remember it herself.
He curled up in bed until his alarm went off, got cleaned up and dressed, then snuck out of the house. He usually caught Karyn on their way to school...but he wanted to catch her at home. He was barely keeping calm. First his sister, now his mom...
He rang the bell at Karyn's house, and Karyn's mom answered. "Jon? What are you doing here so early? We were just about to have breakfast."
"Well..." he started, trying to think up a plausible lie.
"Come in, you can join us. Are you all right?" Bethany Black said.
"Couldn't sleep last night," Jon said.
"Sorry to hear that," she said, escorting him toward the kitchen. Jon started to relax....until he entered the kitchen. His face went white.
"Hey, Jon-boy...what's wrong...you look like you've seen a ghost," the teenage girl sitting there said.
The girl had short red hair, and was wearing a pair of ripped black pants, an ratty looking denim jacket, and a white top. But he'd recognize the face anywhere. "Zoe..." he said, trailing off.
Zoe instantly got up, all seriousness. "Are you all right?" she asked, grabbing his arm.
Bethany frowned. "Why don't I leave you two alone for a few minutes?" She suggested, and headed upstairs.
"Seriously....are you all right? Is this about...you know what?"
