"Hi, Jon boy," a voice said. But it didn't sound like Karyn. He looked up and froze. The girl in front of him had red hair, like Karyn had...only the face below it was...Sarah McMillan.
"Sarah?" He said, unable to cover his surprise.
She arched an eyebrow. "Who did you expect?"
He looked her over, subtly. Red hair, but it was longer than Karyn's had been. She wasn't dressed like Karyn either, although she had Karyn's build. She had on a pair of jeans, white sneakers, and a green and white top. She looked like any of a dozen girls at school. "Umm...no one?"
"Come on...you're a horrible liar. What's wrong? Seriously," Sarah said.
"Just...is this something different about you today?"
"You're just noticing my new hairstyle now? Jeeze, Jon...we saw each other yesterday. Sometimes, you're completely oblivious. I bet I could dye my hair blonde and wear a skirt and it would take you a week to notice."
Sarah seemed so...comfortable ribbing him. Like Karyn did. But not the same kind of ribbing. And Karyn hadn't changed her hairstyle in...well, forever, unless you counted the wish.
"I just..had a lot on my mind," Jon said.
Sarah paused. "Your grandfather?" She asked, with obvious sympathy....something he hadn't thought Sarah capable of. At least the one he was used to.
"Yeah..." He said. It wasn't exactly a lie. It was on his mind. Just a lot else had happened.
"Well, I'm here if you want some company. Well, not right now...I have class, but after school."
"Umm sure..." he said. Sarah gave him an odd look. It was weird to see a Sarah who seemed to know him so well...without him having any idea what was going on.
And if Sarah was his friend...what happened to Karyn? And was anything else going on?
