The cell phone rang. He didn't recognize the number. "I really don't want to talk to anyone," Jon muttered. But he didn't have much of a choice.
"Are you almost here?" A female voice said. "Your 9:30AM arrived early and she is complaining about waiting again."
Jon looked at the clock. "It's only 8:30," he protested...not sure what he was protesting.
"Tell her that."
Jon sighed. "I'll be right there." He assumed there was the address on the work ID. This was what navigation was for.
He turned on some music and pulled out into traffic again, trying to just let whatever instincts he'd inherited do their work. Before long, he was pulling into a parking spot that said Reserved in the lot of an five story office building. He headed inside and upstairs, entering the office number on the card. It turned out to be some sort of doctor's office.
"Jenny Madison," a semi-familiar voice said. It sounded liike...Sarah? "I'm so sorry to get here early...but I have an appointment this morning, and I knew you'd be able to fit me in early..." Standing there in the waiting room was a blond haired woman looking better than anyone her age had the right to... Where had that thought come from? She didn't sound particularly sorry.
"Just give me five minutes to put my things away and get settled in and I'll see what I can do," Jon said, forcing a smile. And hopefully I can figure out whatever it is I actually do here.
"Of course."
Jon walked over to the receptionist, who also looked familiar, though he couldn't immediately place them. "Good morning," he said.
"Morning, Jen." She said, then lowered her voice. "Honestly, I think she comes here just to gloat at you. But...we're stacked after her till the afternoon, so you might as well get it over with."
"Wonderful," Jon said, feeling he could express that out loud.
He headed past her into the back. Daniel was a paralegal...and I'm a... he looked and saw a sign on the wall. dental hygenist.
