When John awoke, he saw the same fairy from before sitting next to the bed. She was reading a book and when she he was awake put it down and said,
"How do you feel? I'm sorry I had to use that potion on you but I had to be sure. You really don't remember anything before you returned to our world, do you?"
John struggled once again to remember anything, even a minor detail of his previous life but couldn't come up with more than the nagging feeling that he had to get out of here and go back, but go back where? And for what purpose? He shook his head and apologetically said, "No. Nothing is coming back. What's wrong with me?"
Gen honestly didn't know and told him, "We always return to this world with our memories intact and fully aware of our vist to the human realm. I have no idea why you don't."
Just then, John felt a rumbling in his stomach. He sat up and swung his legs over the edge of the bed. Looking to Gen he said,
"I'm feeling a little hungry. Could you get me something to eat?"
At this, Gen's mouth fell open in shock. Fairies didn't get hungry, they ate only because it was pleasant but they didn't have digestive systems and the food was just dissolved instantly after they swallowed.
"You're what?" she asked. She knew what he had said but she just needed to hear it again. If this was true, it only further confirmed her earlier suspiscions.
"I'm hungry. Why? Is something wrong?" John asked.
Gen explained fairy physiology to him and as soon as she was done he noticed his hunger had gone.
"You're right. I guess it was just in my head then. But how do I know what hunger is?" John was getting very nervous now.
"I don't know but I have a theory. I know this will sound strange but please bear with me. Have you heard the legend of the wishing stone that was stolen from the fairy kingdom eons ago?"
Hearing the words 'wishing stone' caused something to stir in John's addled memory but not enough to awaken any memories.
"No", he replied, "What is it?"
Gen went on to explain the legend:
"It's said that the wishing stone was a gift to the human world, given to one of their greatest heroes by our first queen. Legend says they fell in love but were unable to consumate their feelings due to the obvious differences between fairies and humans. The queen managed to imbue a large boulder with the power to grant the wishes of any human who held it. Some stories say she knew the wishes were irreversible, others say she didn't but they all agree that he immediately wished to be part of the fairy world. As you know, fairies are only female so he immediately changed into a beautiful girl fairy. This didn't matter to them and the made passionate love into the night. The next day, he told the queen he needed to return to his world, there were people who needed him. He made the wish to return to human but nothing happened. Thinking that it would only work in the human world he left carrying the stone. Several weeks later, he fell from the sky and landed in the palace garden naked, still a fairy, and with no memory of who he formerly was or his love for the queen. They tried everything to bring his memory back but nothing worked. Sadly, his love for her never returned either and he eventually left, never to be seen again. In her grief the queen gave her life to keep him in this world, thus creating the one trip limit to the human realm we all have to deal with."
When she was finished she got up, opened the window to the balcony, and stood outside. John followed her and they stood out there, taking in the early morning air and watching the suns rise from the north and the east.
"So you think I might have been human once?" John asked
"I don't know, it sounds silly but it fits with the story" Gen replied, then added, "There is a way we could find out".
"How?" John asked.
"We can link our minds. It's a fairly new and complicated spell but I've practiced it and I know the basics. If I can get deep enough, I might be able to find the truth"
John thought for a moment, looking out at the beauty of the world in front of him. What he saw made him very content but he knew there was someone out there who needed his help and he owed it them to remember.
"Let's do it" he said.
