"Actually, you kids have been through so much, I think you should be rewarded. I wish you both were right now starting an all-expenses-paid, two-vacation to DisneyWorld!"

Karyn and Jon both disappeared. A moment later, Mrs. McMillan wished for the party to break up and all of the kids to leave. And she wished that Sarah were in military school.

Mrs. McMillan carefully considered what she would do next. She smiled to herself as she wished that her ex-husband's new wife (who was half of Vanessa's age) weighed three times what Vanessa did. She also wished the girl's heart would instantly adjust to the new poundage it had to power. She didn't want to kill the poor dear, after all. But Vanessa wouldn't be mad to find out that the girl was "on top" when she changed.

Feeling very pleased with herself, Vanessa sat down and turned on the television. It was time for the 11 o'clock news. Vanessa watched as the camera showed Polly Van Buren start to report the news.

Report! thought Vanessa. That's a good one! As far as she could tell, Polly had no journalistic ability whatsoever. The rumor was Polly had gotten the slot by showing the station manager what "skills" she did have! So now, Polly was highly paid for doing little more than a parrot could do.

A parrot! The idea made Vanessa sit bolt upright. What an excellent idea for a woman named "Polly!"

But it would be too cruel to do a colleague. Wouldn't it? No, Vanessa just couldn't find it in herself to turn Polly into a parrot.

"I wish Polly Van Buren had the BRAIN of a parrot!" said Vanessa with a laugh.

The camera was on Polly at that moment. The anchorwoman went blank in mid-sentence. When she didn't say anything, the co-anchor, Nicholas Cole whispered "Polly? What's wrong? Polly?"

"Polly wanna cracker!" cried the newswoman. (Gives a new meaning to the term "newshen" though Vanessa at home.) Polly had her hands tucked under her armpits, giving the impression her arms were wings. She got on top of the news desk in her stocking feet.

"Polly?" said Nicholas.

"Pretty Polly! SQUAWK! TWEET!"

Vanessa sat and enjoyed the spectacle.
