Jon sat staring at his meal, not feeling much at all like eating. He received a second burst of resonance in his inner ear, the same as before but quickened.

The meal was good, an island of normality in a sea of problems. He had at least seven wishes in mind that he felt could mitigate or undo the damage, but the fact was everything this stone had done to this point had been increasingly unnerving. It was discomforting even to be near it at this point.

Maybe Dad left early today. Mom didn't set out food for him. Jon was grateful at least one family member wouldn't get wrapped up in thi-

Jon's phone started vibrating in his pocket and his entire body jolted so hard it hurt. He almost went to answer it, before remembering that seeing profile pictures might be enough for the wish to change the person. His mother had a rule about no phones at the table, so he rushed into the bathroom.

N-no no no, Jon shut his eyes when he remembered the mirror in the bathroom, and immediately went into his room instead. With his eyes still shut, he answered the call.

"Jon, that rock yesterday did a number on my life. I have about eight times more contacts in my phone and I'm pretty sure my mother's family is from a different country now. I thought your grandfather said it had a range?!"

Jon was at a loss for a response. He just leaned against his bedroom door.

"Oh my goodness, did you make another wish? Without me? What did you change? Wait, did your test wishes before you showed me the rock change anything about me?!"

This was getting to be too much. Jon was holding out for Karyn to help him fix this situation, and she sounded even nearer to a full blown panic than he already was. So much for a clear headed second opinion...

"Y-yeah I made a wish. This morning, not before I showed you the rock, you're the same. Er, were the same... before the hair wish yesterday!" Jon was trying to find a sense of calm to lead this fiasco back to.

"Jon, this rock rewrote so much, if there 's no range limit it could've easily been used to make me your friend. Or make me in general out of a classmate. Or..." She wasn't crying but she sounded close.

"Karyn, I'd wished for a pen to change colors and for a lifetime discount at the corner store." Jon admitted flatly.

She laughed. A little too hard and a little too long.
