When the Workmen finished, they brought in new furniture. A desk. A chair. A futon. They seemed to be remaking the room as some sort of guest room...as if Mikey had never been there at all.
He turned toward his mother's room, and tried to wake her up, to no success. Zoe was equally out of it. It seemed everyone was out but him.
He wasn't sure what to do. He didn't see any way to stop them. He even tried calling 911, but the line wouldn't connect.
Finally, when they were done, they loaded up everything in their large black truck and drove off. He nodded off while trying to figure out what to do.
The next thing he knew, his alarm was going off...It was 7AM.
He put on a t-shirt and shorts and went to check on his things. He gently turned the knob on Mikey's door and peeked in. It didn't look occupied. He walked past the family photos on the wall...Mikey had been removed from all of them...as if he'd never been there.
He ran back to his room to call Karyn.
