Kyle Quimbly was an orphan living in San Francisco, California, United States of America. He had no parents, but the kids at the orphanage were like his siblings. They had weekly outings to the park and the pool. While it was not great living, they were all content with their lot in life. That was until the alien menace appeared. Z'lanthrax attacked just as Kyle was preparing to take a dip in the pool. All of his new found family members were slaughtered in front of him. Just as it was about to be his turn, he was saved by a trio of soldiers. They killed the Z'lanthrax that destroyed his family. Then they took him to safety. From that point on, Kyle was sure of 2 things. The first thing was his hatred of aliens. That did not just apply to the Z'lanthrax. The Radiant Ones were the race that opened up the portal to Earth. Nothing would have came if it was not for them. The second thing was his desire to join the fight against the Z'lanthrax. One day, maybe he could help end the alien threat and send all of them back to wherever the hell they came from. He was 12 at the time, so Kyle had to wait another 2 years.

It was rough on him. He had to survive on his own on the streets of a ruined city alone. That was not something to be easily brushed over. Kyle did every thing that he had to do. He stole and fought and did odd jobs for all of the people still there. Something that was Kyle's favorite thing to do was to run to the emergency supply center and "volunteer" his time to help. It was not something that he had a real choice in doing. If they needed help, the goons of the state Coast Guard would grab people off the street. They were the conscripted into community service. Luckily, they were not completely heartless. Those that helped hand out goods got first pick of the supplies that were being given out. Kyle got his clothes and shoes there every couple of months. Then, at the end of the day when no one was looking, he smuggled his favorite grape soda out of there. The next day would be spent drinking it slowly throughout the day like an idiot. It was his favorite part of the long weeks. That got him noticed by several members of the Coast Guard. They also had tasks for Kyle. Some better than others.

Eventually, Kyle got to his 14th birthday. He had no one to spend it with. There was simply no one that he was close to anymore. He spent the day slowly sipping on the grape soda he had. Kyle made sure that he held off on drinking them for this moment. He held tight to the scrap of cloth that was around his neck. That came from the tablecloth that they use to put the food for the picnic they planned on that day. It was all that he had left of his second family. He cried himself to sleep that night. The next day, he went to the guys in the Coast Guard. The were about to take him to the supply center when he said "I turned 14 yesterday. I wanna join that big Glowie stuff you guys have." They looked at each other for a moment. There was one asshole who rolled his eyes. He said "Yeah yeah. We got stuff to do today, Kyle. All those supplies aren't going to distribute themselves." They then took a pissed Kyle to do his work. Kyle did not show up in that area for a month. When he did, he was surprised. The other members that he was cool with had signed a letter recommending him for the program.
