Before either Jon or Karyn could do anything, though, the yellow-colored stone began to glow suddenly, then a bright flash of light filled the room. When the light dissipated, the stone was no longer yellow, but it wasn't black or back to its original color either. Instead, it was orange.
"Why is the stone changing color like that?" Jon asked. "And why did it flash? No one made a wish."
"Oh there you are," a voice said behind them. Jon turned and saw his sister Zoe, looking as gothic as usual. She was looking directly at Jon. "Uh, Jen? What's your sister doing here?"
"Sister?" Jon asked. Then he got it. His sister must have thought that he was Karyn's twin sister, not to mention one of Zoe's friends.
"What difference does it make whether I'm here or not, Zoe?" Karyn said, crossing her arms in front of her chest. "My sister doesn't mind. Do you, Jen?"
"Huh? Oh, yeah. Of course not," Jon said, then he turned back to Zoe. "Listen, Zoe. Can you give me and Karyn a minute alone. We have to figure something out."
"Whatever. Just come up to my room when you're done," Zoe said, then headed upstairs.
"What did you want to figure out, Jen?" Karyn asked.
"Karyn, we're alone now. You don't have to call me Jen."
"Well, what else am I supposed to call you?"
Jon looked at her for a moment, then said "Jon."
"Why would I call you by a boy's name?"
What was the matter with Karyn? It was like she thought that Jon really was her twin sister. But why? Could it have something to do with why the stone flashed, even though no wish was made?
"Just give me the stone, Karyn," Jon said.
"Stone? What stone?" Karyn asked.
She didn't remember the stone either?
