Karyn headed into her next class and nearly bumped into Amber Levine. The girl looked distracted. "Sorry," Amber said. She nearly bumped into someone else.
Karyn wondered what was wrong with her. She didn't particularly have any opinion about Amber one way or another, but something was clearly bothering her. She slid into a desk and turned, noticing an unfamiliar Asian girl sitting there, setting out pencils and a notebook. She must be new...While most of the students in the school had been there since freshman year, they always lost and gained a few each year. "Are you new here?" She asked.
The girl had a noticeable accent. "Yes, my family just moved here." She spoke very deliberately...English clearly wasn't her first language, but Karyn had no issue understanding her. She was dressed modestly, in a long skirt and white shirt.
"Where from?"
"Japan...Father received a job offer here."
"How are you liking it so far?"
The girl made a face. "I told Father that Americans do not have school uniforms...but he insisted I wear this, so that the teachers will respect me." It wasn't exactly a uniform...but a white shirt, and a dark skirt it looked enough like one.
"That sucks..." Karyn said.
"Father is very traditional," she said.
"I'm Karyn..Karyn Black."
"Yuki...Meshida" the girl said. She seemed to be bracing for something...but when Karyn didn't react, she seemed to relax. "It is your pleasure to meet me...I mean..." she seemed a bit frustrated.
"It's fine...I wish I knew another language. I take Spanish and I couldn't carry a conversation outside of class."
