It was the next day at school when Jon and Karyn were having a heated discussion about using the wishing stone to try to reverse what Karyn had done to herself. Nadine Ferguson just happened to be walking by at that moment, hearing them talking about magic and how much good it could do. Well, Nadine knew better. Use of magic of any kind was of the devil and was obviously evil. Real or not, no one should have anything to do with that sort of thing. It would send people down the wrong path. She was even against things like fantasy movies and video games. They were just a gateway to something worse down the road.
"Magic is evil," Nadine said, butting in on their conversation.
"Uh huh," Karyn said, then turned back to Jon, continuing.
Nadine fumed. She wasn't taking her seriously! She was trying to save her immortal soul! She then grabbed Karyn, really catching her attention this time.
"What the hell, Nadine?!" Karyn yelled.
"You're going to pay attention to me! Magic is evil!"
"Hey, let her go!" Jon yelled, but instead of doing what he said, she pushed Karyn into the wall, causing his friend to fall on the floor. "Hey, what did you do that for?!"
"None of you ever listen to me!" Nadine yelled, this time to everyone in the hallway. She had finally snapped. Karyn's refusal to listen had pushed her over the edge. Seeing her boil over, everyone in the hall kept their distance, not wanting to be her next target. "I'm trying to save your souls!"
"You have a hell of a way of doing it," Karyn said, rubbing her shoulder and butt, where she had collided with the wall and floor, respectively.
"Nadine, you're a menace. Maybe it's high time someone did something about you," Jon said, reaching into his pocket and touching the stone.
"Oh, and what can a couple of sinners like you two do to me? I have God on my side. What do you have?" Nadine asked.
"This," Jon said, pulling out the wishing stone and holding it up so Nadine could see.
"A rock?"
"Wait, Jon. Maybe this isn't a good idea," Karyn said. "Sure, she can be a bitch sometimes, but remember what we were talking about. You know, making the world a better place?"
"I am," he said, before saying "I wish ..."
Since everyone else in the hall moved away from them, whatever wish he made would only be heard by himself, Karyn, and Nadine.
