the bystander wasn't transformed by the doll into another doll...instead the unfortunate soul was absorbed. The dolls sockskin poured over him and pulled his body into it. And then it closed around the last of him as it entered its mouth. Without emotion it processed him and then stuck out one hand and began shedding sock after sock into the street, his entire mass now converted to Nicole's ankle socks in various styles which now crawled into every house on the block, ready to turn the entire neighbor hood that was left.
A couple awoke to find a pair of purple ankle socks on the husbands feet and baby blue on the wife's, and then quickly morphed into a pair of 20 something Nicole's and went back to cuddling and sleeping.
