The multi-dimensional zapper was a simple machine that looked a lot like a weird cross between the ghostbusters PKE reader, and a gun strapped to the end of a strange polymer plastic and a mobile phone. It was very light and had a computer interface with a small screen on the user’s side. With the device, one can cross dimensions to any reality stored in its database- and manual entry could allow for dimensions unknown.
The computer is constantly scanning ‘nearby’ dimensions and adding it to a database with an Artificial intelligence adding ‘notes’ of what it finds based on probability. Sufficiently dangerous dimensions are locked out by the AI but it is not full-proof. The AI will not reveal itself, unless given a specific command code.
To use the gun to cross dimensions, one must first select a destination using the icons on the touch pad, then fire the trigger. A white beam of light will shoot, leaving a gigantic ball of a ‘mirror’ effect. Stepping though this will take one to another world that is on the same topology within a reasonable tolerance. The gun can make subtle adjustments on space time as required to ensure a reasonable approximate landing in the same space, but different dimension.
The portal remains until the gun goes out of range or enters the portal or is destroyed.
There are two power cells. The first is a standard Lithium-ion battery that charges the computer display. Any sufficient voltage will charge it back up. A hidden winding key is present to provide manual charging.
The second power-cell appears to be related to punching a hole in the fabric of time-space. This material is unknown but is theorised to be a bottle of anti-matter that is somehow being kept from making contact with normal matter, at least until the trigger is discharged. It is this anti-matter explosion that causes the rupture in space-time.
While it is technically possible to fire an anti-matter particle on an extreme emergency, the AI will generally not allow this to happen. If an attempt is made to tamper with the tool in such a way that that it becomes a weapon and will result in death of the user or those around, it will activate a ‘home’ portal on itself and vanish… taking those it thinks might be in the most danger with it to a safer place.
In general the AI is voiceless, hidden and tries to be ‘helpful’. It doesn’t mind providing assistance to a traveller and even giving a hint or two if asked as a simple computer interface hiding the fact that it is actually an artificial intelligence.
When found, it is easily repaired.
