Buffy didn't have much interest in English class, so her eyes drifted and ended up landing on Karyn as well.
The poor girl. She still looked shaken. What had Sarah done to her in that bathroom? Buffy knew better than to push Karyn, but she resolved to spend the rest of the day keeping an eye on her so that when she was ready to talk, about anything that had happened that morning, there would be a friendly ear available. Buffy would be Karyn's rock.
Just as Jon, it seemed, was Buffy's rock. She didn't understand why he was always there for her, but he was. This morning's emergency bra delivery was just one example. When she'd rolled her ankle and had to drop both track and volleyball for two weeks, he was there with an ace bandage and a foot massage. When she was at risk of flunking algebra 2, he made time to tutor her. Whenever Buffy found she was overwhelmed from listening to Karyn, Jon served as her overflow valve.
Both of these people were very important to her, but Buffy knew that their only real connection with each other was through her. Her daydream wandered, and Buffy imagined some reality where Jon and Karyn were best friends.
