"Oh geez!" Buffy cried at Jon, "I had no idea Sarah McMillan was in there! I would never have sent Karyn in alone if I'd-- Jon, wait here for me."
Jon was himself in a bit of shock, and could only stand there as his friend Buffy Meadows exited the hallway through the bathroom door.
"Karyn!" Buffy wrapped her arms around the weeping girl and rocked back and forth. "You're okay, Karyn. She's gone. She left the school."
That wasn't why Karyn was crying, but she found her situation so overwhelming that she couldn't talk about it, even on the off-chance she thought Buffy might believe her. Even thinking about what had just transpired threatened to open her floodgates once again.
"You're my best friend, Karyn. No matter what happens, no matter what's going on, I want you to always remember that."
The words comforted Karyn in a way that she didn't understand, but they also brought up some questions that her subconscious was already working on: just what kind of person was Buffy Meadows? Why would a cute, normal girl like her be friends with a slob like Karyn? If Buffy was her best friend, then where did Jon fit into things now?
Questions for later. For now, she would allow herself to become lost in this friend's embrace.
