"I wish we didn't have a test our first day back, Mr Hargreeves is such a hardass," Richie Roberts, one of the band kids, griped. Hargreeves, their math teacher, seemed to resent the students potentially having fun over breaks, and tended to schedule exams for the day classes resumed.
Time seemed to stand still for Jasmine as she felt the atmosphere buzzing around her. While they could choose to ignore them, granting wishes was a strong instinct for Djinn and this was Jasmine's first experience with it since the reality shift. Almost without thinking, she wiggled her hips as she channeled the magic through her, sending two tendrils of mystic energy racing down the hallway. One of them intercepted Mr. Hargreeves and made the man stumble, spilling his coffee all over the copies of the trig test, while the other darted into the copy room, simultaneously draining all the ink cartridges. Jasmine felt a rush of euphoria as she felt her own magical power ever so slightly expand after granting the wish.
This was the best sort of wish, she realized as girlhood lessons on how and when to grant wishes appeared in her mind. While djinn were quite powerful as far as magical creatures went, they were also vulnerable, especially when they were young. If a wizard, or even just a well informed mortal, snared them in a binding circle, or spirits forbid, got their hands on a Djinn's vessel, things could go very dark very quickly. To that end, most Djinn rarely did the stereotypical granting of three wishes, and indeed tried to keep their nature secret. That's what made wishes like Richie's so ideal. It was the sort of thing you could grant without the wisher realizing that anything supernatural had happened, and as a bonus it also meant Jasmine would get to avoid the test as well.
Memories were coming to her of her mothers stressing the need to not let on she was Djinn to the humans around her. That was the reason she'd been tutored at home for the early years of her life, when she was at her most vulnerable, and why Melia was still instructed at home. Once she'd been allowed to start granting wishes herself, she'd been coached on how to grant wishes in a way that it seemed like just chance if at all possible. A Djinn had a great deal of leeway in how a wish was granted if the wisher wasn't careful, and there'd also been lessons on how to turn a wish on someone if she were ever captured.
Realizing she'd stopped still in the hall, she shook her long brown locks and rushed off towards Hargreeves class. Even if the test had to be postponed, she didn't want to get in trouble for being tardy. Unfortunately, in her haste, as she rushed around the corner, she bowled right into someone. She felt her face smooshing into two soft orbs as she tripped forward, as she tumbled forward on top of her unlucky roadblock. She tried to push off to get up, accidentally placing her hands on those same orbs as she righted herself. "EEP!" Opening her eyes, she discovered she was sitting atop Sarah McMillan, with her hands planted right on the taller girl's boobs. Oops
