"There's a lot of strange coincidences," Jon noted aloud. He and Karyn were eating lunch at the local diner after their unsuccessful search of Sarah's place.
"You mean Sarah disappearing?" Karyn said. "What else?"
"I just mean, with Sarah's cousin and all," he clarified. "Some weird wish happens and at the same time, Sarah disappears, and one of Sarah's cousins I've never heard of gets married? It's strange." He took a bite of his hamburger. It tasted unusually delicious, like he'd gone a really long time without eating one, even though he knew that was silly.
"So you think it's connected?" Karyn asked, stealing one of his french fries.
"Ketchup?" he offered, letting her dip the stolen fry before popping it in her mouth. "Yeah, I think it must be related somehow. I can't really explain it, but the whole thing just feels... off to me."
"Hmm, well, I guess we know our next lead," Karyn said, helping herself to another of his fries. "After lunch we'll go back to the McMillans to find out more about this Joan. If we have to, we'll fly to the other side of the country and meet her ourselves."
"Fly?" he exclaimed, his eyes widening. "Are you serious?"
"Very," she asserted in a dead serious tone. "Whatever happened, it's very serious stuff. In the wrong hands, that stone could cause disaster. We need to get the stone back, understand?"
Jon could only nod. "Yes, ma'am."
He expected Karyn to roll her eyes. Instead, she just nodded. "Let's chew quickly."
