"Okay, so this stone grants wishes." Jon said. "Even if it does, I don't see what I could have done that would make me forget everything."
"Look, that thing gave me blonde hair and big boobs." Karyn replied. "It can do anything. You probably didn't watch what you said around that thing."
They were silent for a while. Neither of them knew what to do now. Since the stone wasn't in Jon's room, they hadn't the faintest idea where to start looking for it.
A thought occured to Karyn. "Sarah disappears, and so does the stone." she said aloud.
"Coincidence?" Jon asked. Somehow, he didn't think so. He wasn't sure why, but he knew somehow that Sarah was connected with the stone's disappearance.
"I don't know. But it can't hurt to check things out."
The next day, Jon and Karyn questioned many of Sarah's acquaintances. One of her 'boyfriends' said that on the night Sarah disappeared, he had last seen her heading toward Jon's house.
"You think maybe she stole the stone?" Jon asked.
"I wouldn't put it past her." Karyn replied. "In fact, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense."
"So if she stole the stone, there's a chance it might be at her place." Jon realized.
Immediately after school, Jon and Karyn visited Sarah's house. They were greeted by her parents, who told them they still had not seen or heard from Sarah. They had called the police to investigate.
Jon and Karyn asked if they could search Sarah's room. Sarah had something which belonged to Jon, and they would have asked her to give it back if she hadn't disappeared. Sarah's mother grudgingly consented.
They searched Sarah's room thoroughly, but could find no trace of the stone. Mrs. McMillan (Sarah's mother) was in tears. "To think, my Sarah disappears the night before her cousin's wedding." she blurted.
Karyn caught something. "Cousin?"
"Yes." Mrs. McMillan replied. "Her cousin Joan got married yesterday. To a farmer on the other side of the country."
Jon was barely paying attention. He was staring around at the room. Something about this place seemed familiar...even though he was sure he had NEVER been inside Sarah's house before.
Karyn wasn't sure why, but she felt she had to ask about Sarah's cousin. "Did Sarah and her cousin get along?"
"Hardly ever." Mrs. McMillan replied. "Joan always was such a sweet girl. I wish Sarah were more like her. But they were always fighting. I don't think Sarah hopped on a plane so she could attend the wedding, if that's what you're thinking."
"I don't remember Sarah having a cousin Joan." Jon said out loud, and then immediately wondered why. He didn't really know Sarah well enough to know whether or not she had any cousins.
Karyn turned to Jon. They still were no closer to tracking down Sarah, and finding out what she had done to Jon, and what she had done to herself. If the stone had caused Sarah to disappear, both Sarah and the stone could be anywhere. Chances were that they wouldn't see either again.
Karyn was stuck. She didn't really know what they were going to do now.
