Jon thought for a moment before speaking.
“Actually there is something else” he said, “I’ve been noticing a few other weird things ”
“Weird how?” Ruby asked leaning forward.
“We’ll I’ve noticed that I’ve been doing things I normally wouldn’t know how to do, like the cooking for instance, it’s like I have all these recipes memorised, that I’ve never seen before.” He continued. Ruby nodded thoughtfully for a few second.
“Have you ever heard of the phrase ‘genetic memory’ before?” She asked. Jon shook his head.
“Essentially it boils down to important survival instincts hardcoded into our DNA from our ancestors thousands of years ago. It’s why you can feel when someone’s watching you, and why humans are generally still afraid of the dark etc” she said as as she sat back, “I think what’s happened is some of your mothers knowledge is now being transferred to you through the genetics that are merging with your body” she continued. Jon took another second to comprehend what she’d just said.
“So these feelings and emotions I’m getting, some of those are hers?” He asked.
“What kind of feelings are we talking about?” Ruby asked with interest. Jon took a deep breath, nervous to admit what he’d been feeling.
“It’s kind of embarrassing actually” Jon could feel his face flushing with embarrassment “but yesterday I… well… I think I was I was kind of turned on by Laura… I mean mom.” He dropped his gaze to the floor.
“It’s ok,” Ruby smiled gently, “ you’re probably experiencing your mothers feelings for your father. I’m sure she’s been feeling the same way” she added.
“I know it should feel wrong, but it’s more exciting than anything. I’m just worried that we..I…” Jon mumbled. Ruby nodded then pulled up another chart on the tablet.
“Might do something you’d regret?” She asked, “it’s interesting actually. As I said before your DNA is shifting into something new. Looking at the results here, they’ve already changed so much you’re not actually biologically related to her anymore. All the markers that would indicate any relation are gone. In fact the same goes for your father. Interestingly, you show the relevant markers for Zoe, Mikey and Karyn” she said, almost to herself.
“What does that mean then?” Jon asked hesitantly.
“I’m sorry, I probably should have said anything,” she replied, “I just find it so fascinating. It means that this attraction your feeling is completely natural. I know mentally your still repulsed by the idea, but physically your body is just responding to what it considers normal. It’s entirely up to you whether you act on these desires.” She added. Jon nodded thoughtfully.
“I think I understand” he replied after a moment, “thank you Ruby, this was helpful. It feels good to get it off my chest” he added with a smile.
“Not a problem Jon, was there anything else?” Ruby smiled again.
“Not that I can think off” he replied getting to his feet.
“Well, you’ve given me a lot to work with here. If you could send the next person down that would be great.” She replied. Jon nodded with a smile and headed back upstairs.
“It’s natural to feel this way..” he mused to himself as he made his way back to the living room where the others waited.
