(Author's Note: Thought I'd try something, so I used some of the pieces to branch off in a different direction.)
Jon shook his head to clear it, then followed Athena to the sophomore wing, where the two of them had American Literature for their next class.
"I'm not sure what's up with you today, Jon," Athena said. "You seem distracted about something," she said as they slipped into adjoining seats in the classroom.
Jon frowned, looking around, having a strange feeling that this classroom, and the other students was wrong somehow.
Karyn DeVries walked into her next class, Jon barely on her mind. While Karyn Black had gotten plenty of hand-me-downs from her older brother, Karyn DeVries was the oldest...and would be handing things down to Athena.
Zoe’s last two classes for the day were art and creative writing, neither of which were separated by grade. If they had been, she might have noticed a different set of students populating the room than normal, or perhaps she would have found herself in a new room altogether.
But as it stood, a reasonably-distracted Zoe Gibson did not pick up on what few clues there were that something had changed. Which hand-outs she had been given. Which classmates were talking to her. Little things.
And if she'd thought about the fact that Sarah hadn't known her longer than a day, it may have seemed strange when, after classes ended, she was greeted by a Sarah McMillan who was almost the exact same height as her, instead of being a few inches taller. But she didn’t notice these things, and instead simply followed Sarah’s lead when the cheerleader suggested they return to the mall.
Briefly, Zoe thought to text her mom and to text Athena, but something about each of those felt like they made no sense to her. Sarah, at the same time, wasn't thinking about why she was hanging out with Zoe. But both girls were just having fun, and the two eventually returned to Zoe’s home, giggling.
As they headed down the hall to her room, Zoe spotted her brother in what was once Zoe’s black dress, working at his desk.
"Hey, Jon...what's going on?"
"Just getting my homework done so I can go hang out with my friend..." he said, coming over to them.
Zoe looked down at him and frowned for a moment. He was shorter than either of them.
"What?" Jon said, confused. She could see the top of his scalp. She started to think back to the..
"Zoe," Sarah interrupted. "Come on...I want to see how you look in that outfit you got..."
Zoe nodded, and as they headed toward her room, she shot a few glances back at Jon.
