While Zoe had managed to divulge some information to Sarah in the short breaks between classes, it wasn’t until lunch that the two were really able to talk. In a reversal of the previous day, the two huddled by themselves in Zoe’s usual corner of the cafeteria, rather than joining Sarah’s group of friends.
“So Karyn DeVries used to be Karyn Black?” Sarah was trying to get everything straight. “And I used to hate her?”
“Well, you just seemd to not like her,” Zoe clarified. “The one you hated was my brother.”
“Why would I hate Mikey?”
“Not Mikey,” Zoe sighed. “Jon.”
“Who’s Jon?”
“Dawn is my brother Jon.” Zoe raised her voice slightly.
“But Dawn is your sister.”
“Yes,” Zoe was now exasperated, “just like I am a cheerleader.”
Sarah winced at this, a look of guilt as she remembered the wish she had made. But it made the information sink in. “I’m sorry.”
Zoe calmed back down. “It’s okay. I know it’s confusing. Just, Karyn remembers everything now just like I do, and she's also made a wish she regrets, and she wants to help. I think with your help too, the three of us can outsmart these wishes.” Zoe looked Sarah straight in the eye now. “But I need your help.”
“Anything,” Sarah nodded.
