Karyn nodded. "Right. So, let's see if we can do this. First off, tell me what wishes you've already tried. I'm guessing you already wished that Sarah was your sister again."
Roger shuffled his feet. "Um, actually, no. In fact, I never made any wishes to fix Sarah."
At this, Karyn's jaw dropped. "Huh? Why not?"
"Well, the note that Jon's grandfather left specifically said that wishes couldn't be reversed. So I figured there was no use."
"Are you kidding me?" An incredulous Karyn blurted out. "You read a note, so you didn't even try?"
"Uh yes?"
"Unbelievable," Karyn sighed, rubbing her forehead. "Look. Wishes can't be undone, but they can be tweaked if you figure out the loopholes. Do you know what Jon's wish was?"
"How could I forget?" Roger mentally checked that the stone was safely in his pocket before repeating Jon's fateful words. "He wished that Sarah would change into someone who would love to participate in his mom's book club."
Karyn leaned forward. "That was his exact phrasing?"
"Absolutely."
Slowly, Karyn began to grin. "Believe it or not, I think your problems are solved."
"How?"
"The kind of person Sarah became from the wish depended completely on the type of book club Jon's mom is running. If she were to run, for example, a club where they read books aimed at teenage girls "
"Then Sarah would become exactly that," Roger finished, his eyes growing wide. "I never thought of that before."
Karyn grinned. "You see? We can really fix this if we try. You'll have your sister back in no time."
Roger agreed. He carefully refrained from mentioning that changing the book club to fix Sarah would likely have some unintended consequences for the other members. Frankly, he never really liked them in the first place. For now, it was more fun to let Karyn's good intentions run ahead of her good sense.
