In the corner of the room Sarah and her friends were being themselves, which wasn't a very nice thing to be, but it worked for them. Being mean gave you power, here let me show you.
"I wish Nadine would stop sulking in the corner so I could tell her what I think of her, she's so shy and mousey, but every time she looks at us you can tell she thinks she's misses hot pants. 'I've got Jesus and you don't!'" she mocked. "Well I've got mascara and a boyfriend!"
Just at that moment Nadine found herself walking over to the cheerleaders. She thought it was because she heard them say her name, but had she tried not to come over she would have found her legs still taking her to them like a meat on a conveyer belt to a grinder.
"Did you say my name?" Nadine announced her presents with.
Now it was the Sarah's turn to have the magic work on her. Sarah found her every opinion of Nadine flowing out of her like lava from the volcano. She couldn't stop. At first her friends thought she was having her fun, then after a bit it felt like she was laying it on thick, then it felt uncomfortable like too much, but Sarah couldn't stop, she needed to tell her to get a better hair cut, to remind her of all the times she failed to match or dress well, IT HAD to be said that Nadine was never going to have a boyfriend, that the real problem wasn't external but that inside she was too into herself and jesus, not that the fact she clearly didn't give a fuck if she got fucked was the only thing that her conservative dress and modest attitude gave away was helping anything.
And Nadine just stood there and took it. Took it all in. Sure she cried, she wanted to protest, but she was there to hear it all and so she did. After a while she started to hate, herself, as some of the points Sarah was making grazed the truth a little too coarsely, she could see all of her flaws laid out in front of her, like a harsh mirror was held up to her face. Then she started to hate Sarah for saying these things. For being so much better, for being something she didn't want to be, but was expected to be and for being so mean about it. Nadine cried, and her tears finally got one of the girls to say:
"God Sarah, I wish you'd lay off a bit"
At which point Sarah was finally allowed to stop her onslaught.
There was a moment between the girls, Sarah knew she had gone too far, that she had hurt her, this wasn't about power anymore, it was about pain. Sarah wasn't a monster, and she felt that awkward shame that one feels when you've stepped over the line. She didn't know what had set this off in her, but her momentum from the ran was still going when she tried to end it by saying...."I just wish you'd change."
At which point Nadine ran off. Sobbing. Sulking. but also Changing.
EDIT: When writing the above Nadine story I was writing under the assumption that it was only a couple of branches deep, as it seemed and as tends to happen on this site. Looking further down the line I see that I was wrong. Opps. So lets just say that the story happens at some point, there was a time jump, it was "later that day" with another mean girl Sarah who the universe had filled the Sarah shaped hole left by her turning into a freak. I apologize for any confusion.
